CA's Wine Industry Is Shrinking — Even Screw-Cap Makers Are Hurting

Falling demand for wine is rippling through the industry, hitting not just wineries and grape growers but the companies that supply them.

MODESTO, CA — A Northern California producer of wine screw-caps plans to lay off dozens of workers as the wine industry struggles with declining consumer demand, inflation and rising costs, the Los Angeles Times reported.

G3 Enterprises's layoff of 66 workers, most of whom are involved in wine screw-cap production, is expected to take place between Oct. 6 and Dec. 31. The job losses are expected to be permanent, according to the Times.

The facility will remain open and continue producing other types of beverage closures, a company executive told the newspaper.

The layoffs are another sign of the pressure rippling through California's wine industry as Americans buy less wine. Demand has fallen as older consumers age out of the market, younger generations drink less alcohol and more drinkers turn to beer and spirits, the Times reported.
