1. More Sacramento residents can now get a rebate for replacing older toilets (sacramentocityexpress.com) — Sacramento water customers now have a broader chance to get money back for swapping out older toilets, with rebates up to $50 for 1.6-gallon models from 1992–2013 and up to $175 for pre-1992 high-flow units. To qualify, you must get pre-approval and install a MaP Premium ultra-high-efficiency toilet using 1.1 gallons or less per flush. The program applies to eligible single-family and multi-family homes served by City of Sacramento water.
2. Sacramento considers bringing back red light cameras for 20 intersections. How you can weigh in (kcra.com) — Sacramento officials are exploring bringing back red light cameras at 20 busy intersections across areas like Natomas, Downtown, Arden-Arcade, and south Sacramento, this time under a new state law and city-run program. Cameras would only capture rear license plates, with fines starting at $100 and discounts for low-income residents, and revenue earmarked for Vision Zero safety upgrades. Residents can weigh in through an online survey before decisions are made.
3. Fix50 construction nears completion after nearly six years in Sacramento (kcra.com) — Drivers on Highway 50 through Sacramento are finally nearing the end of years of Fix50 construction, with wider shoulders, a new HOV lane, and taller median barriers coming online between I-5 and Watt Avenue. Overnight lane reductions will continue for several weeks as Caltrans finishes drainage, electrical work, and a new sound wall, all aimed at improving safety after a work zone that has seen a troubling number of crashes and deaths.
4. Governor Newsom announces appointments 8.21.26 (ca.gov) — From the Capitol in Sacramento, Governor Newsom has named several Californians to key statewide posts, including a Sacramento resident as State Chief Information Security Officer. The appointees will influence technology security, coastal conservation, and statewide work on women and girls' issues, with several ties back to Sacramento institutions and education.
5. California Counties Report Decline in Homeless Populations This Year (hsjchronicle.com) — Sacramento County's homeless count rose 13% since 2024, even as numbers inside Sacramento city limits dipped, raising questions about where people are going and how they're being counted. Local advocate Niki Jones doubts the apparent progress, warning that encampment crackdowns may simply push unhoused residents out of sight while state funding uncertainties threaten recent gains statewide.
