Welcome to the Sacramento Daily Patch Newsletter! This is where you will find all of the best news and events happening in Sacramento for Tuesday November 23rd, 2021!

First, today's weather:

Some sun; fog early. High: 62 Low: 45.

Here are the top stories today in Sacramento:

  1. A Sacramento-bound Amtrak train hit a pedestrian Sunday night near West Sacramento, resulting in at least one fatality. The train, near Interstate 80 and Reed Avenue, was stopped on the tracks for three hours while the incident was being investigated. (CBS Sacramento)
  2. During training ahead of the rainy season, on Sunday the Sacramento Metro Fire Department's Swift & Flood Water Rescue Task Force 9 showed off some new life-saving technology. The department explained it now uses thermal imaging from drones to more easily locate people and animals in need of rescue. Thermal technology can locate heat sources in cold water, allowing firefighters in boats to respond quicker. The drones can also drop life vests to people in need of one. If you should find yourself in a situation where you need rescuing from water, it is important to remain calm and to actively do as instructed. Being frantic, flailing about and not listening to commands when being rescued can be dangerous not only for the person in need of rescuing but also the first responder. (KCRA3)
  3. Sacramento police tried pulling over a driver who they allege failed to yield at a stop sign near Bamford and Grandstaff Drive on Sunday, but the driver fled. The vehicle was located later in the evening with a firearm magazine loaded with ammunition inside. The vehicle was parked at a residence. Sixty-one-year-old Curtis Smith was arrested at the property and charged with felony possession of ammunition. He's currently being held on $1,020,000 bond. (ABC10)
  4. On Monday, Target announced that it will no longer be opening on Thanksgiving Day. It's a major change from basically a decade ago, when Target and other big box stores started opening on Thanksgiving to get a jump on the holiday sales rush. Click the link for a list of other stores in the greater Sacramento area that will be closed on Thanksgiving. (CBS Sacramento)
  5. The Sac Republic FC Winter Wishlist has returned! This will be the Club's second annual coat, toy, and food drive for the 2,300 students in the Robla School District in North Sacramento. Upwards of 90% of the Robla District families live at or below the federal poverty line, 20% of the students do not have a permanent address, broadband and internet connectivity are not always available, and there are no social or health services available in their community according to the Sac Republic website. Through December 16th, Republic FC members and fans are encouraged to bring new coats and toys for kids ages 5 – 12 . (Sacrepublicfc.com)
