The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Sacramento.

Happy Wednesday, Sacramento! Let's get you all caught up on what's happening locally to start today off on an informed note.
First, today's weather:
Very warm. High: 85 Low: 48.
Here are the top five stories in Sacramento today:
- There has been so much change with this pandemic and the number of people needing help is overwhelming, but what can you do? Well, Antelope couple Nancy and George are a shining example of what one person can do to help another in these times of change. For over 8 years, Sacramento county provided care giving services to a couple in Sacramento. As the fallout from the pandemic is being felt, the county stopped coming and garbage and waste started piling up for the couple who couldn't take care of it themselves. Nancy and George saw their story, and, rather than wait for the county to do something, they decided to take the matter into their hands and volunteer to help. Last weekend they cleaned up the apartment for the couple. Small acts of kindness can make a huge difference. (ABC10)
- There are more white doctors in the U.S. than any other race or ethnic group, according to the Association of American Medical Colleges, a nonprofit association dedicated to transforming health through medical education, health care, medical research, and community collaborations. Dr. Stephanie Walton is a pediatrician in Sacramento. She learned about the importance of representation in medicine from Dr. Vernon L. Walton, Sacramento's first Black pediatrician. Dr. Vernon Walton founded Walton Pediatrics and Medical Associates in the early 1960's, opening his first office in Del Paso Heights. Since then, the practice has expanded from one small office to three locations throughout the Greater Sacramento region. Now, Dr. Stephanie Walton is following in her father's footsteps, serving as the the medical director for Walton Pediatrics and Medical Associates. Dr. Stephanie Walton is focused on keeping her father's legacy and mission alive. (ABC10)
- The Sacramento County Agricultural Commissioner, in cooperation with the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA), is beginning the second year of an eradication treatment program in response to detections of Japanese Beetles in the Arden-Arcade area, and within the city limits of Rancho Cordova. Affected property owners will be contacted prior to treatment. The JB is of concern due to the ability of both the adults and grubs (the larval stage) to destroy plants here in California. The JB is an invasive species in California and is native to Japan, where it is controlled by natural predators and a cooler climate. Residents with questions about the project may call the Sacramento County Agricultural Commissioner's office at (916) 875-6603 or CDFA's Pest Hotline at (800) 491-1899. Additional information can be found on the CDFA website. (saccounty.gov)
- Call it serendipity, but thanks to the skills of an off-duty fire captain, a family and their dog are safe. It happened in Citrus Heights where a Sac Metro fire captain happened to be driving by when they saw a fire and alerted the occupants. The captain helped get everyone out safely, including the family dog who was initially trapped inside. (CBS Sacramento)
- On March 11, Wilson Du emerged from UC Davis Medical Center with a new kidney and a new lease on life. But the six-year journey that led to the 40-year old's life-saving transplant surgery began with a life-threatening crisis. Du's high-stress and unhealthy lifestyle had caught up with him. His kidneys shut down as a result of untreated high blood pressure. He was forced to join the thousands of others on the transplant waitlist. Junichiro Sageshima, Du's surgeon and surgical director of the UC Davis Health Living Donor Kidney Transplant Program said "We encouraged Wilson to lose weight to give himself the best chance of enjoying his kidney transplant journey." That approach could also shorten his wait time. Du approached the situation head-on and lost 135 pounds! Du has partnered with Brian Cimagala, an independent video producer, to document his journey. He says the disease that literally brought him to his knees has ultimately shown him how strong he is. Now, he wants his story — and a future documentary — to bring hope to others. (UC Davis Health)
