California To Fund $900 Million In Affordable Housing, Transit
Gov. Gavin Newsom announced the new funding, saying it would help reduce "sky-high housing costs" across California.

SACRAMENTO, CA — California will award nearly $900 million in funding to help communities build affordable housing and transit, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Thursday.
“Sky-high housing costs are putting the squeeze on family budgets while long commutes contribute to dirtier air,” Newsom said in a statement. “By bringing housing closer to jobs, we can fight climate change and create healthier, sustainable communities across California.”
The funding is made up of $610 million from the state's cap-and-trade program, and another $279 million from the state's Infill Infrastructure Grant Program, according to the statement.

Communities can apply online for the funds, which will be awarded by the California Strategic Growth Council.
“California cities are eager to build denser, affordable housing that connects communities —particularly those in the most under-served areas — to services, jobs, and green spaces. But many face both a lack of funding and inadequate infrastructure,” said Kate Gordon, chair of the strategic growth council.
