🌱 Cody Wiggs Denied Bail + Buck Busfield's Final Bow

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Sacramento.

(Patch Media)

Hey, Sacramento! Here's everything you need to know to get this Friday started off right.

First, today's weather:

Plenty of sun. High: 63 Low: 37.

Here are the top five stories today in Sacramento:

  1. Cody Wiggs, the Sacramento man accused of setting off pipe bombs has been denied bail as he sits in jail on multiple charges. Wiggs was arrested following two separate incidents where pipe bombs were detonated in vehicles in Oak Park. At a court hearing on Tuesday, Wiggs' bail was officially changed to "no bail" because of the severity of his charges and his prior run-ins with the law, a court public information officer told CBS13. He's scheduled to appear in court on February 15 at 8:30 a.m. (CBS Sacramento)
  2. After more than 35 years as one of the central pillars of the Sacramento theater scene, B Street Theatre's Buck Busfield is exiting the stage. Buck first joined his brother Timothy Busfield in 1986 to help launch a local touring children's theater – and eventually expanded it into the current "The Sophia: Home of B Street Theatre." Over the years, he's built the original children's theater program into a larger vision that first included the B Street Theatre before melding into the current Sophia theater complex that houses three stages and produces theater productions and musical concerts. It was turning 70 years old that made Busfield realize he was ready for a change, and that the theater was ready for new leadership. In retirement, Busfield will step back from the day-to-day operations, but will continue to be involved as a board member and consultant. He may even continue on as a playwright. All these years he's penned an annual holiday play. (SN&R)
  3. One person has died and four others were hurt Wednesday evening after a Butte County shooting inside a bus, officials said. First responders arrived and found "several subjects suffering from gunshot wounds" who were transported to area hospitals. A 43-year-old woman died at the scene, despite life-saving measures. The shooting suspect, later identified as 21-year-old Asaahdi Elijah Coleman of Sacramento, fled before law enforcement arrived, the sheriff's office said. Law enforcement personnel took Coleman into custody inside the nearby Walmart on Cal Oak Road "without further incident or the use of any kind of force." The identities of the victims will be released once next of kin is notified. (KCRA3)
  4. Over a month after announcing students will be starting the spring semester at Sacramento State virtually, the school announced Wednesday that students will be able to return to campus on this coming Monday, Feb. 7, "when all classes will return to the modality originally published in the course schedule," Sac State wrote in a press release. According to Sac State, about 96% of students, faculty, and staff are vaccinated, and they expect students to remain safe as the mask mandate and other precautions remain in place. (ABC10)
  5. An arrest has been made in connection to a shooting in Antelope that left a 16-year-old girl with "life-altering" injuries, the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office said Wednesday night. Deputies with the sheriff's office said the 16-year-old girl was with her mother and her 14-year-old brother when, near Watt Avenue and Blackfoot Way, someone pulled up next to their car and started shooting. Oybek S. Khamidkhodjaev, 34, of Sacramento, was arrested Tuesday after a brief car chase that started at Fulton and Marconi avenues and ended at Scripps and American River drives. The girl remains hospitalized. (CBS Sacramento)
