Happy Thanksgiving, Sacramento!
First, today's weather:
Sunshine mixing with clouds. High: 60 Low: 41.
Here are the top stories in Sacramento today:
- NASA launched the Double Asteroid Redirection (DART) spacecraft successfully on Tuesday night. The DART spacecraft is designed to move asteroids off a collision course with our planet. A Folsom woman worked on the Aerojet Rocketdyne team that helped design the spacecraft. Elizabeth Gabler, 24, was a sophomore in college, working as an intern at Aerojet back in 2017, when she was tapped to join the DART design team. Now, she gets to see her work through to fruition. She explained that there was only a one second window of opportunity and if conditions weren't just right, the launch would not have happened. Thankfully, she got to see the launch from Vandenberg and watch her hard work take flight. (KCRA3)
- Some Sacramento-area medical providers are warning of a shortage in ICU beds in the coming months, not just for COVID-19, but for deferred medical problems, as well. People are showing up with chronic conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure that went untreated during the pandemic. That's put more pressure on community hospitals, a problem that's being felt across the country. While the supply of ICU beds may be low, patients should still check themselves in if they need help, officials said. (KCRA3)
- A man with no memory and no ID is headed home after spending 88 days at UC Davis Medical Center. It's believed the man, who the hospital said is named Francisco, was hit by a car in the Arden area back in August. When he arrived at the hospital he had no memory of who he was. About a month later, tips from the community identified him only as Francisco. The hospital says Francisco is now recovered enough to go home. He will be reunited with his family in Mexico soon. (CBS Sacramento)
- A man has been arrested in Elk Grove after police say he attacked a woman as she pushed her grandson in a stroller. Police say 29-year-old Drakkar Jenkins approached the 63-year-old woman from behind along W. Stockton Boulevard and Wooded Brook Drive and allegedly shoved her to the ground. He then stole her debit cards and cell phone. Police caught up with him near Highway 99 and Sheldon Road. Jenkins was was arrested and booked on several felony charges. (CBS Sacramento)
- The City of Sacramento will modify its parking meter operating hours during the holiday season in select areas to incentivize residents and visitors to dine, shop and attend events in downtown and midtown. From Nov. 25 to Dec. 25, no payment will be required at select on-street meters after 4:30 p.m. on weekdays and all day on weekends within the holiday parking zones. This includes green meter payment machines. Meter screens will reflect when parking is free and when payment is required. (Sacramento City Express)
