Welcome to the Sacramento Patch daily newsletter for everything happening Thursday August 26th, 2021 in The River City.
First, today's weather: Clear throughout the day. High: 95 Low: 62.
Here are the top stories today in Sacramento:
- A new local celebrity is in the house! Chef Christopher Barnum-Dann, owner of Localis restaurant in Sacramento took the top award in a Food Network cooking competition called "The Globe." When he's not blowing the socks off of celebrity chef judges, he's creating masterful cuisine for Sacramentans Wednesday through Sunday at his restaurant on the R Street corridor in the quiet neighborhood historically referred to as Newton Booth. (FOX40)
- To ease the affordable housing crisis, California's legislative leadership is looking at enacting a new law. SB9 seeks to to allow up to four homes on a single lot without local government approval. More homes on less land — at least in theory — could lead to more homes that more Californians could afford. The law would allow duplexes on single parcels and it would also allow a single parcel to be split in two, theoretically allowing up to four dwellings on what is now a single parcel. The City of Sacramento has already made moves in this direction. Whether this will lead to more affordable housing and more equity in ownership is a subject that is being intensely debated. (SN&R)
- Roland Brady is a geologist who has been working to clean Steelhead Creek for years. The creek has been overrun with junk, but heavy equipment would damage the creek bed, so that was out. What's the solution? Draft horses! The pilot program has been funded by the Sacramento Regional Sanitation District, and seems to be working well. The horses are pulling tires, water-logged blankets and even overgrown vegetation from the creek. The horses will continue this cleanup through Thursday. (CBS Sacramento)
- The Sacramento City Council voted to declare a Stage 2 Water Alert. That means the city of Sacramento joins neighboring cities like Folsom and Roseville in requiring residents to reduce water usage by up to 20%. The Stage 2 vote allows for fines for water waste to be doubled, and car washing will be restricted to watering days. (KCRA3)
- The Sacramento Walk of Stars celebrates famous Sacramentans from fields far and wide, including Dusty Baker and LaVar Burton. After a year long hiatus, the celebration is back with the newest star being revealed outside of Mulvaney's B&L in midtown. Drum roll, please! The newest honoree on the Walk of Stars is The Healthcare and Frontline Workers. Check out all 14 stars some time down there in midtown. It's pretty interesting! (FOX40)
