Welcome to the Sacramento Patch daily newsletter for everything happening

Saturday August 28th, 2021

in The River City.

First, today's weather: Clear throughout the day. High: 102 Low: 65.

Here are the top stories today in Sacramento:

  1. A Sacramento mother is living the chaos in Kabul as she tries to get her four children to safety from outside the Kabul airport. She was there when terrorists attacked earlier this week. Her hope, and her Sacramento family's hope, is that they will be reunited here in the coming week. (CBS Sacramento)
  2. The El Camino High girls' volleyball team took on El Dorado High in Placerville, but before the competition started, they had something they needed to do. The Sacramento team gave the Placerville team gift baskets. You see, many of the Placerville girls had been impacted by the Caldor Fire - one losing her home, entirely. The Placerville coach said she hopes this act of kindness spreads like the wildfire, and creates more wonderful stories to share. That's sportsmanship! (KGO-TV)
  3. Michael Morgan, the longtime music director for the Sacramento Philharmonic died last week at the age of 63 from complications from a kidney transplant. As a conductor, Morgan believed the orchestra, especially smaller orchestras, should strive to represent the communities they served. The Sacramento Philharmonic was basically a side-gig for Morgan, as his main gig was as the Music Director for the Oakland Symphony. Imagine having that kind of impact with your side gig! That's quite a man.(Capital Public Radio)
  4. East Sacramento hotels are completely booked due to refugees from the Caldor Fire. People were moving west and finding fewer and fewer places to take refuge. A new West Sacramento hotel opened a week early to accommodate them. It took in their pets, too. Home2 Suites by Hilton West Sacramento had it's grand opening on Wednesday, but it's real opening a week earlier was even grander taking in those who had no home to go to. (Woodland Daily Democrat)
  5. The man who barricaded himself in his mobile home, yesterday, telling neighbors and police that he had weapons, has been successfully taken into custody. The identity of the man has not been made public. Neighbors had been evacuated and utilities shut off to the mobile home park out of an abundance of caution. Police say the man also had a warrant out for his arrest. (CBS Sacramento)

Sacramento Patch Notebook

  • If you're tired of the heat and jonesin' for some skiing, you're not alone. It may be early to be thinking about it, but the early bird catches the worm, as they say. Today at Land Park Ski & Sports you can get some screaming deals on some gently used items for the snow at its Ski and Board Swap. If your drug of choice is white powder, get out there and get yourself some new gear!
  • Enhanced wildfire smoke has returned to the valley and will persist throughout the weekend. Make sure to take the necessary health precautions! The official air quality forecast can be found at airnow.gov (Facebook)
