🌱Happy 100th Bill Malkasian! + Slew of St Paddy's Day Events

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Sacramento.

(Patch Media)

Hello, people of Sacramento! It's me again, Jeri Karges, your host of the Sacramento Daily.

Happy St Patrick's Day, Sacramento! May you have the luck of the Irish today!

First, today's weather:

Pleasant with clouds and sun. High: 69 Low: 41.

Here are the top five stories in Sacramento today:

  1. A woman says she was intentionally rear-ended before being pepper sprayed and robbed in South Sacramento. The victim was Nith Phouangkeo, 57, a businesswoman and an immigrant from Laos. She said she had just had lunch in a shopping center near 65th Street and Stockton Boulevard Friday when the incident occurred. The suspects took her $800 purse, which she said also held some cash, medicine and her keys. Hau Nguyen, 30, and Phung Nguyen, 35 were arrested on charges related to the robbery, according to Officer Chad Lewis, a police spokesperson. (ABC10)
  2. March is National Social Work Month, and Sacramento County joins the National Association of Social Work (NASW) in celebrating this great profession and in sharing this year's motto, "The Time is Right for Social Work." The goal of Social Work Month is to inform the public, policymakers and legislators about the way social workers meet people where they are every day and help them live to their fullest potential. Sacramento County employs almost 600 social workers in many different County departments. The Department of Child, Family and Adult Services (DCFAS) and the Department of Human Assistance (DHA) have the largest numbers of social workers on staff. Sacramento County has an ongoing need for social workers to help the community's most vulnerable residents. The Human Services Social Worker and Human Services Social Worker (with Master's Degree) positions are on continuous file, meaning the County is always accepting applications. If you're interested in applying, visit saccountyjobs.net. (Patch Press Release Desk)
  3. The Sacramento News and Review moved out of its building and now, a new owner — the Sacramento Public Library — is moving in. The building has 18,000 square feet of space. Much of it will be renovated to meet the needs of a modern library and community center. Staff is already using the building as a logistics hub to disperse books. (CBS Sacramento)
  4. Sacramento is now the 11th least affordable place to live across all large metropolitan areas in the country. That's according to a new housing report. The report by Porch, which offers services for homeowners and housing professionals, found that Sacramento residents are paying more for housing and goods in comparison to most other cities in the U.S. Porch used data from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis' 2020 Regional Price Parities and found that Sacramento's overall cost of living is 6.1% higher than the national average – and the cost of goods in the area was also found to be 3.6% higher. (KCRA3)
  5. A Sacramento County man who is a World War ll veteran and former minor league baseball player celebrated his 100th birthday this week. Sarkis "Bill" Malkasian was recognized for his contributions to his country on Tuesday, surrounded by friends and family. In his time, the veteran also served as an educator and a White Sox organization player. But out of all his accomplishments, he said he's most proud of his family. To live a long life, Malkasian said his secret was to be honest, laugh and live life to the fullest, no matter your age. Sounds like great advice to me! (KCRA3)
