🌱 Help For Old Sac + Local Murder Tales + Sweet Music in Folsom
The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Sacramento.

Happy Thursday, people of Sacramento! Let's get you all caught up on what's happening locally to start today off on an informed note.
First, today's weather:
Fog in the a.m.; partly sunny. High: 61 Low: 39.
Here are the top stories today in Sacramento:
- The Sacramento Housing and Redevelopment Agency has opened an application window for a program that aims to help very low-income families and individuals in securing affordable places to live. The Tenant Based Voucher Housing Choice Voucher waiting list is open through Jan. 26, at 11:59 p.m. There is no charge to apply. Those interested in applying can do so at sacwaitlist.com. (KCRA3)
- Sacramentan David Kulczyk, the West Coast music writer-turned-Sacramento homicide historian, has just finished his latest book called "Forgotten California Murders." Kulczyk is among a handful of local homicide historians who focus their pages on average perpetrators and average victims, rather than trying to score glamor points within the salacious world of serial killers. Kulczyk says, though this is not his first book on the subject, it may be his last. He's not sure how many more bones of good stories are left for him to unearth in the area. (SN&R)
- Sacramento leaders approved a plan Tuesday evening to help prevent crime and help Old Sacramento businesses still struggling with pandemic impacts. The Sacramento City Council voted to allocate $800,000 for the Sacramento Downtown Partnership to improve the look and feel of Old Sacramento over the next three years. "I'm proud that we have consistently put our federal COVID relief dollars out to work on behalf of our community," Mayor Darrell Steinberg said in a release. (KCRA3)
- According to the California Highway Patrol, two people were killed early Wednesday morning in a single vehicle accident on Sacramento's Interstate 80. The crash occurred around 1:10 am, with a Toyota Prius taking an east-facing off-ramp towards Raley Boulevard at high speed and crashing, said CHP's North Sacramento division. The driver was a 35-year-old man from Sacramento. Another male passenger has not yet been identified. CHP cleared the scene by 3:25 am and traffic was unaffected. (California News Times)
- A SWEET day out in Folsom always includes a trip to Snooks, but along with the sweet chocolates, you can also enjoy some sweet music. Have you ever noticed the piano that sits in front of the store? It belonged to grandfather Snooks who, apparently, was also a bit of a banjo player. The Folsom Historical Society partnered with the candy maker to refurbish this bit of music history and now you and I can play it any time we're in town! (I didn't say I could play it well.)
