🌱 Land Park Taiko Drumming + Sac Fire Helmet Rescue

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Sacramento.

(Patch Media)

Happy Thursday, Sacramento! Let's get you all caught up on what's happening locally to start today off on an informed note.

What a FUN day of stories today! The first three Top Stories are the ones I love to find. Enjoy!

First, today's weather:

Warmer with variable clouds. High: 75 Low: 45.

Here are the top five stories in Sacramento today:

  1. Throughout her career as a professional taiko player and instructor, Tiffany Tamaribuchi has always managed to elevate women in taiko. As a child, the Sacramento native was captivated by the Japanese folk music and the big drum that kept a steady beat as people danced at the Placer Buddhist Church during Obon, the Japanese festival honoring one's ancestors. She clearly remembers being told she could not play the drum because of her gender, but she didn't let that stop her. "I'm the first woman in Sacramento to be the Obon dance drummer," Tamaribuchi says, recalling the many years she dedicated to observing, learning and patiently waiting to be given the honor. She founded Sacramento Taiko Dan to keep the heartbeat of Japanese culture and community alive in her hometown. You can watch the taiko players perform at William Land Park and in what remains of Sacramento's Japantown. (KQED)
  2. The Sacramento Fire Department is paying tribute to its first African-American fire chief with a new installation displaying the helmet of former Fire Chief Raymond J. Charles. The leather helmet will be on a permanent display at the City of Sacramento's Public Safety Headquarters on Freeport Boulevard. A reseller recently found Charles' helmet at a thrift store in Wilmington, Del., and decided to auction it online. The Sacramento Fire Department learned of the auction, and in partnership with the Sacramento Area Fire Fighters Local 522, was able to offer the winning bid. The helmet sits in a section of the public safety building along with photos and other memorabilia from Charles' time at the department. The building also features a "hall of honor" named after the former fire chief. (Sacramento City Express)
  3. OK, so, you're 14 years old, have been doing a sport for 2 months that doesn't even have a track in your hometown and you BREAK A 21 Year RECORD? Yep! That's what Emily Bradley, a Christian Brothers High School student, did - at the Lake Placid Trials, nonetheless. Her father was big into bobsledding and she decided that careening down the track at speeds of up to 80 miles per hour sounded like fun. So she tried it. And liked it. And is likely to be a name in the sport for a long time to come. Congratulations, Emily! (ABC10)
  4. Two Sacramento-area high school students were caught on camera marking racist graffiti on the walls of a school building. A release by the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office states students from Rosemont High School were writing in pencil racist remarks on March 22 around 5:15 p.m. Those students were identified by school officials. The sheriff's office said it will check with the Juvenile Division of the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office if criminal charges are being considered. (KCRA3)
  5. Cosumnes Community Services District (CSD) Board President Jaclyn Moreno on March 27 officially launched her campaign for the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors District 5 seat, holding a gathering in Elk Grove. District 5 encompasses more than 650 square miles and includes the Galt, Elk Grove, Rancho Cordova and Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta communities. Also running for the District 5 seat are Elk Grove City Council Member Pat Hume, former Elk Grove Mayor Steve Ly, former Elk Grove Unified School District Trustee Alex Joe, Matthew Pratt and Jacob Kohl. County Supervisor Don Nottoli, who has represented the district since 1994, told the Herald last year that he will not seek reelection. (The Galt Herald)
