🌱 North Sac Marijuana Bust + Ice Blocks Full + Grand Jury Call

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Sacramento.

(Patch Media)

Happy Friday, Sacramento! Here's everything you need to know going on locally today.

First, today's weather:

Fog in the a.m.; mostly sunny. High: 64 Low: 37.

Here are the top five stories today in Sacramento:

  1. Three men from the Sacramento area have been arrested in Placer County after law enforcement said they went on a "looting spree" during recent power outages. Deputies were called to a home around 3 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 1, along Putt Road in Emigrant Gap, after the homeowners reported catching people trying to break into their home. Deputies eventually found the three men who allegedly tried to break into the Emigrant Gap home nearby in an SUV. During their investigation, deputies learned the SUV the men were in was allegedly stolen. Law enforcement also identified another home the three men allegedly broke into where $4,000 worth of property was stolen. (ABC10)
  2. A new report says, over the last decade, the capital city saw the seventh-largest increase in the cost of living across the country — a 21% jump. The biggest areas of inflation were food and beverage, and housing. But what's behind the overall increase? According to consumer group Filterbuy, that's ongoing supply chain issues and worker shortages and, housing analyst Ryan Lindquist says, the Bay Area exodus didn't help. (Good Day Sacramento)
  3. A months-long investigation into an alleged illegal North Sacramento-area marijuana dispensary has resulted in a large stash of drugs and guns being seized, authorities say. Large quantities of marijuana were seen being transported by a suspected Oak Park Blood gang member. Surveillance of the operation soon confirmed that there was an illegal pot dispensary being run – complete with armed security – at the site. Police found more than 200 pounds of marijuana, as well as more than four pounds of mushrooms, 10 guns, and more than $21,000 in cash. (ABC10)
  4. The annual vote to elect a new Chair and Vice Chair of the Board of Supervisors was held Tuesday, Jan. 11. This year's elected Chair is Supervisor Don Nottoli of District 5, and Rich Desmond of District 3 was elected Vice Chair. The Chair and Vice Chair serve annual terms. (Saccounty.gov)
  5. It was announced that the popular clothing and home goods chain Anthropologie will open this summer, along with a Salt & Straw ice cream shop in the Ice Block development in Midtown. With those additions, Ice Blocks has been fully leased for 100,000 square feet of office space, 55,000 square feet of retail space, and all 142 apartment units. The Ice Blocks shopping area is centered around 17 and R streets, an area that was full of old warehouses until about five years ago. It includes a mix of stores and restaurants, from West Elm, to Mendocino Farms restaurant, Bluemercury cosmetics and See's Candies. "Now our urban core is also getting some of the major brands that have only been in regional malls," Deron Benvenuti, director of leasing for developer Heller Pacific, said. (KCRA3)
