Here are the top five stories in Sacramento today:
- A 23-year-old man was arrested in connection with homemade explosives found within the same week in Oak Park, according to the Sacramento Police Department. The suspect, identified as Cody Wiggs was arrested on felony charges and booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail. During the investigation, officers found two active pipe bombs and evidence that a pipe bomb had been detonated near the intersection of 19th Avenue and 32nd Street. The Sacramento Police Department is asking anyone with information to call Sacramento Valley Crime Stoppers (916) 443-4357. The tip line is anonymous, and a reward for information is possible. - On January 30, 2022 shortly after 1:50 a.m., Sacramento Police Department patrol officers responded to the area of Power Inn Road and Butte Avenue regarding a report of a collision involving a vehicle and a pedestrian. At the scene, officers located the pedestrian, a male adult, in the roadway with serious injuries. Officers attempted to perform life-saving measures, but the victim was pronounced deceased at the scene by responding personnel from the Sacramento Fire Department. The involved vehicle fled the scene after the collision. The Sacramento County Coroner's Office will release the identity of the victim after next of kin have been notified. The Sacramento Police Department encourages any witnesses with information regarding this investigation to contact the dispatch center at (916) 808-5471 or Sacramento Valley Crime Stoppers at (916) 443-HELP (4357). Callers can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a reward up to $1,000. (Sacramento Patch)
- An apartment complex project in Land Park will get funding from the state to create affordable housing units. The California Strategic Growth Council announced it will fund the Broadway Apartments project on 19th Street and Broadway. The Broadway Apartments includes 150 affordable units with retail space on the first floor. The funding will come from the CSGC's Affordable Housing and Sustainable Communities program. (FOX40)
- A fight between a group of parents broke out Friday, Jan. 28 at the front entrance of River City High School, according to Washington Unified School District. The school was placed on lockdown temporarily and West Sacramento police officers were called to campus. According to the principal "Campus security officers and administration immediately responded to the incident, and we are investigating the incident thoroughly to determine disciplinary action." Anyone with questions can contact the River City High School administration office at (916) 375-7800. (ABC10)
- It's not often that the fire is brought to the firehouse, but that's just what happened on Sunday. A garbage truck driver realized that a fire was occurring in the truck tank and the decision was made to dump the load in front of Station 4. An engine was on call nearby and managed to respond in time to put out the fire. (CBS Sacramento)
