🌱Old Ironsides in Escrow + Sacto Ukrainian Church Helps Refugees
The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Sacramento.

Hello, people of Sacramento! It's me again, Jeri Karges, your host of the Sacramento Daily.
First, today's weather:
Warm with plenty of sun. High: 78 Low: 48.
Here are the top five stories today in Sacramento:
- Teachers with the Sacramento City Unified School district went on strike Wednesday morning after attempts to reach a bargaining deal with the school district failed. According to the district, they offered changes to health coverage, pay increases, a slate of one-time bonuses, increased pay for substitute teachers and nurses and more paid days for professional development. "The current proposals to increase compensation are a reflection of what we can currently afford in our budget," Christina Pritchett, president of the SCUSD Board of Education, said in a statement. The union has asked the district to agree to the recommendations from a neutral panel, which released its fact-finding report last week. Those recommendations include providing employees with a retroactive across-the-board, cost-of-living increase consistent with the superintendent's contract. (KCRA3)
- The venue that launched a thousand bands is now midway through a potential sale. In its prime, Old Ironsides exploded into a hot-spot for wild, young and ambitious talent. Now, the venue's age is starting to show through its nautical themed décor and dated bar, though its fluorescent backlit stage still remains a home-base for many local musicians. After 88 years – and a long ride in Sac's nightclub and music scene – the Kanelos family may no longer own Old Ironsides. Today, Kim Kanelos, her mother and brother are the only ones left running the business. While her family still owns the building, she says there isn't anyone to pass the business down to. "We are in escrow right now," Kanelos said. "I hope it all goes well, because we've been there before. But it feels pretty good." (SN&R)
- A Sacramento County Ukrainian church is doing what it can to help families fleeing Ukraine by helping to find places for them to stay here in the United States. A month into Russia's war with Ukraine, Spring of Life Church in Orangevale is matching Ukrainian refugees with host families. Over the last month, the church has received hundreds of phone calls and emails from people asking how they can help. The church leaders say the best thing people can do to help is offer to be a host family. Visit solsacramento.com, press the "Support Ukrainians" tab on the home screen where the site walks potential host families through the sign-up process. (KCRA3)
- California Highway Patrol says, a little after 4 a.m., a 25-year-old Sacramento woman crashed into water-filled attenuators at the 59th Street offramp. This caused her car to overturn. A few minutes later, a 56-year-old woman driving an SUV crashed into the already wrecked car. The 25-year-old woman died at the scene, officers say. Her name has not been released. The SUV driver suffered minor injuries. (CBS Sacramento)
- Local architectural firm Nacht and Lewis has helped shape Sacramento's skyline one iconic building at a time. The firm is now celebrating a century of success. The Elks Temple — a 14-story building at 11th and J — was the company's first iconic contribution to the Sacramento skyline. Today, it's hard to walk downtown without seeing one of their designs, from the neo-classical renaissance architecture of the historic post office to both the superior and federal courthouses. The company's most recent projects include designing several new schools, including the new science building at Del Campo High School. "The integrity, the work, it's still there and it's carried on until today," Anthony Arroyo, manager and archivist at Nacht and Lewis said. (CBS Sacramento)

Today in Sacramento:
- The Reggae Campout Festival is a Roots Reggae Camping event that will take place at the El Dorado Fairgrounds at the base of the beautiful Sierra Nevada mountain range just 45 miles east of Sacramento. (10:00 AM)
- Get crafty at Quilt, Craft, & Sewing Festival at Cal Expo. (10:00 AM)
- Stories on Stage Sacramento: Steph Cha and Mary Camarillo will be at CLARA (E. Claire Raley Studios for the Performing Arts), Sacramento. (7:00 PM)
- Piff the Magic Dragon will be at the Crest Theater downtown. (7:30 PM)
From my notebook:
- Can you help make a cat's day? The Bradshaw Shelter is seeking kitten fosters & donations (Press Release Desk)
- A pattern shift may bring chances for unsettled weather Sunday-Tuesday over interior NorCal. Confidence is low on exact timing and amounts. Here's hoping for some precipitation to see March out! (But, bummer, because I'm headed to San Luis Obispo right in the middle of this "unsettled" weather... Nothing like a trip down 5 in the rain...) (Facebook)
- Sacramento PD Had a great visit with 🍪Brownie Troop 840 at headquarters on Wednesday afternoon! Why was the visit so great? Because they donated cookies for the hardworking folks at SPD! It turns out there are many perks to being a police officer (and a Brownie)! (Instagram)
