🌱 Rancho Group Sending Body Armor to Ukraine + Bud Anderson Talk

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Sacramento.

(Patch Media)

Morning, people of Sacramento! It's me again, Jeri Karges, your host of the Sacramento Daily.

First, today's weather:

Clouds and sun; not as warm. High: 70 Low: 51.

Here are the top five stories today in Sacramento:

  1. Sacramento City College's aviation program on the Davis campus is easily one of the school's most unique offerings. Not only is it the only program of its kind in northern California, but it offers a variety of career opportunities in the aviation industry. Although intensive, Sac City accommodates students as much as possible in full acknowledgement that most have jobs, families and lives that add to the rigors of coursework. According to Sac City College Aviation Professor, Thomas Burg "anyone can do this if they want to." Why not take a chance on a career path less flown? 2. A major crash in the Fair Oaks area resulted in six people being sent to the hospital Friday night, the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District said. The crash happened just after 9 p.m. along Hazel Avenue. Metro Fire said four vehicles were involved. At this time, the conditions of those involved are unknown. (CBS Sacramento)
  3. A Sacramento-based Ukrainian American organization is working to send body armor vests abroad. Stephan Skotz, the co-founder of Ukrainian American House in Rancho Cordova, learned about the need when a fellow Ukrainian told him about a friend being killed by a bullet while evacuating. He said there are two main ways people can help get body armor to Ukraine: They can send money through uahouse.org or they can bring body armor they already own to the Ukrainian American House headquarters in Rancho Cordova. (ABC10)
  4. Gov. Gavin Newsom on Friday announced the appointment of the first openly transgender judge to the bench in California. Andi Mudyrk, 58, of Sacramento, will serve as a judge in the Sacramento County Superior Court, the governor's office said. She has been the chief deputy director at the California Department of Rehabilitation since 2020 and previously worked as a chief counsel there. Newsom also announced seven other judicial appointments on Friday. (KCRA3)
  5. A 16-year-old Oakland student who was reported missing in February was found dead in a Sacramento apartment, KTVU reported. Sacramento County Coroner's Office records confirm Marcella Garcia died March 17. Her cause of death is undetermined. (KCRA3)
