🌱Sac Rental Rates Skyrocket + West Sac CHP Memorial Run
The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Sacramento.

Happy Wednesday, neighbors! Here's everything you need to know to get this day started. Here's what's going on around town today.
First, today's weather:
Breezy in the morning; sunny. High: 60 Low: 40.
Here are the top five stories in Sacramento today:
- Cadets from the California Highway Patrol Academy will participate Wednesday in a 5-mile run from the academy in West Sacramento to the California Peace Officers' Memorial near the State Capitol. "This time-honored tradition pays tribute to the members of California's law enforcement community who have paid the ultimate sacrifice," the CHP said in a statement released Monday. There will be 142 cadets and other CHP personnel running in the event. (Fairfield Daily Republic)
- Citrus Heights Vice Mayor Tim Schaefer sought the support of his fellow council members in considering a five-year moratorium on new drive-thru restaurants, saying the city has gone "a little over the top" on such businesses. Other council members seemed unsure whether to support Schaefer's proposal, which would need three council members to agree to putting the item on a future agenda for further discussion or a vote, according to council rules. Councilwoman Jeannie Bruins suggested bringing the topic back instead as a "discussion item" for a future agenda, which garnered the support of the vice mayor and mayor, giving it the required minimum of three council members in agreement to add an item to an upcoming agenda. - Cody Wiggs, 23, was arrested Saturday accused of creating pipe bombs that blew up two cars in Sacramento's Oak Park neighborhood. Emily Carson, who lives near where the second vehicle was bombed, spoke with KCRA 3 about her experience calling 911 dispatchers. She said she was on the phone with them for over 10 minutes trying to explain that what she heard and saw was not a firework. Carson said she has been hearing small explosions on her street for over six months, but every time she calls 911, she's met with no help. Carson, among other neighbors, is advocating for more street lights, fences around the areas most near the highway, and a quicker police response. The city said it is adding 15 more positions to the Sacramento Police Department, while also hiring 19 more positions in the Department of Community Response. (KCRA3)
- Sacramento has one of the lowest rental vacancy rates in the country. Partially because of that fact, one investment firm is predicting that Sacramento rents will continue to skyrocket in 2022. They are predicting that Sacramento will see the second highest increase in rental rates in California, behind only San Francisco. (CBS Sacramento)
- The Sacramento Police Department made 55 arrests on prostitution charges in January, which is National Human Trafficking Prevention Month. Police said the 55 arrested suspects are facing misdemeanor charges of soliciting an act of prostitution. Detectives also arrested a suspect on a felony charge after allegedly pandering, the act of persuading or encouraging someone to engage in prostitution, police said. For anyone with information regarding human trafficking, SPD asks the public to call the dispatch center at 916-808-5471. (FOX40)

The Auburn Area Recreation and Parks District (ARD) is asking for the public's input to name the "24 Acre" property and associated Regional "C" baseball field as it begins the process of improving the property with recently acquired grant funding. Comments or ideas can be emailed to kmuscott@auburnrec.com, mailed to ARD, 471 Maidu Dr., Ste. 200, Auburn, CA 95603; or by calling 530-885-8461, ext. 102. I'm guessing "Parky McParkface" won't make the cut. (Gold Country Media)
