🌱Sacramento Crews Help With Colorado Fire + Jones Announces Run

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Sacramento.

(Patch Media)

Morning, people of Sacramento! It's me again, Jeri Karges, your host of the Sacramento Daily.

First, today's weather:

Mostly sunny. High: 63 Low: 34.

Here are the top five stories today in Sacramento:

  1. The Lenehan family issued a statement to the community regarding the death of the fallen Elk Grove Officer, Ty Lenehan. "Ty was a bright light of personality in our family. His life outside of being a committed officer to the Elk Grove community was dedicated to serving his family and his church community," the message says. It goes on to say "We appreciate the many condolences, the outpouring of love, and the support from the community at large." You can read the full message at the link. Gold Country Baptist Church will hold a memorial for Lenehan soon that will be open to the public. The church has also shared an online tribute for him. (CBS Sacramento)
  2. The Colorado Fire near Big Sur has evacuated hundreds of residents in Monterey County. Crews from the Sacramento region are jumping in to help battle the flames on the Central Coast. A spokesperson with the CAL FIRE Amador-El Dorado Unit told KCRA 3 that four to five personnel are staffed at the McClellan Air Tanker Base, assisting with air attacks on the flames. On Sunday morning, the unit also sent a 35-person strike team to battle the flames and manage the fire fight from the ground. (KCRA3)
  3. The "Fly Market" in the capital city is a free, family-friendly event that organizers say is helping small businesses thrive during the pandemic. The market was the brainchild of some local DJs looking to help Sacramento have fun, all while helping small businesses keep their cash flow going. The market is at Diamond Autosport in Sacramento and brings together nearly 80 vendors, food trucks and local DJs. It's held on the fourth Sunday of every month. More than 3,000 people came out to the Fly Market last Sunday. If you'd like to be a vendor, organizers say to message the Fly Market on Instagram. (KCRA3)
  4. Around 5 a.m. Monday, a man was driving his SUV on La Riviera Dr. near Folsom Blvd. in Sacramento when he hit two parked cars, causing his SUV to overturn, according to the CHP. According to witnesses, the man then kicked out the windshield of the SUV, got his two dogs, and left. Police were still searching for the man at the time of writing. (CBS Sacramento)
  5. Sacramento County Sheriff Scott Jones announced Monday that he has filed to run for California's 3rd Congressional District. Jones said the announcement comes "after much contemplation, speaking with folks, and at the urging of my family." He announced last year that he would retire from law enforcement following the end of his current term after serving more than 33 years with the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office. (FOX40)

Last week, we told you about our new favorite non-alcoholic go-to — the refreshingly bitter drinks from our partners at Betera. They're chef-created from natural botanicals, lightly effervescent and worthy of life beyond "Dry January." We mentioned that their Ginger-Orange was excellent; we've since tried Elderflower-Lime and loved it as well — light and floral with the perfect amount of zing. We're converts.

Enough of you took Betera up on their 15% discount on first orders for Patch Daily readers that they've extended the offer for another week. Use PATCH15 at checkout. Highly recommended — try Betera here.

Today in Sacramento:

  • Taxes In Retirement Webinar will help you with strategies to minimize your tax burden in your third act. (2:00 PM)
  • Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury Prize winner FLEE will be at the Tower Theater. (7:15 PM)
  • Honestly, Sacramento, there aren't a lot of "events" this Tuesday night, but here are some of my favorite places to go play! Try puzzling your way out of an escape room. Dodge bullets that only you can see in a game of virtual reality. Of course, you have to try your hand at axe throwing! Take out your frustrations on the printer that never worked right with a sledge hammer. And if you're a brainiac there are about a million "Trivia Tuesdays" to choose from. Enjoy!!

From my notebook:

  • It may not seem like "wine country" and "food trucks" shouldn't be in the same sentence, but the pandemic sometimes made strange bedfellows. That is the case in Sacramento's Amador region where food trucks took up the slack when restaurants shut down. Head up to Plymouth and check out Blue Stone Pizza at Amador Brewing Co. or find La Esperanza at Sutter Hill Plaza off Hwy 49. If upscale is your thing, they've got a truck for you, too! Taste Restaurant and Wine Bar is rated by Zagat as one of the top restaurants in America, and you can find its Taste To-Go truck serving up casual comfort food beside the tasting room at Prospect Cellars. YUM! With the beautiful weather we've been having, that sounds like the perfect day trip to me! (Comstock's Magazine)
  • Innervoice Media came to Auburn on Monday to film at the Ken Fox Statues. According to Jamie Ross, executive outreach and marketing for Innervoice Media, the local production company brought in directors from Hollywood to film their second episode of a horror series "Tales of the Wildermist." Ross said the company is working on lots of opportunities to bring Hollywood to Auburn. (Gold Country Media)
  • So, you'd like to go out to eat tonight, but bringing the whole family would bust the budget? No worries! Kids eat FREE every night of the week, somewhere in Sac. Instead of tracking down all of the restaurants and deals yourself, Sacramento4Kids has done it for you!
