🌱Sac's Girls Love to Fly Seeks Female Pilots + Lost Your Lizard?

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Sacramento.

(Patch Media)

Rise and shine, Sacramento! Let's get you all caught up to start this day off on an informed note. Here's everything going on in town today.

First, today's weather:

Mostly sunny and pleasant. High: 72 Low: 48.

Here are the top stories in Sacramento today:

  1. Getting more females flying is the goal of a Sacramento nonprofit organization called Girls Love to Fly. According to the Federal Aviation Administration, less than 6% of all pilots are female. Flight instructor and Girls Love to Fly founder Jamie Waterhouse wants that number to soar. Girls Love to Fly offers monthly scholarships for discovery flights and pilot training in their Cessna 150, and they have discounted training and flights for females of all ages. You can learn more on their website here. (KCRA3)
  2. Two unions representing thousands of teachers and staff within the Sacramento City Unified School District overwhelmingly voted Thursday to authorize a strike. It has not set a strike date yet. The Sacramento City Teachers Association announced that 95%, with more than 82% of its members participating, voted to authorize a strike. SEIU Local 1021 chapter members passed the strike vote by 97%, said chapter president Karla Faucett. Both the Sacramento City Teachers Association and SEIU 1021 will hold a rally next week on March 17 at the next school board meeting. (KCRA3)
  3. The Sacramento Zoo is one step closer to getting a new location. A six-month study is now complete and shows building a brand new zoo in Elk Grove is economically feasible. The property that is targeted for the zoo is located at the northwest corner of Kammerer Road and Lotz Parkway. The efforts to relocate the landlocked, 14-acre zoo from its current site in Sacramento's William Land Park to a larger site began three years ago. The new location would afford nearly 60 acres to the property and cost about $205 million for the first stages. Funding would come from tickets and parking as well as city economic development funds. The city is also trying to get Netflix to film the move as a reality TV program. (CBS Sacramento)
  4. Following alleged nuclear scares from Russia and the war in Ukraine, searches for bomb shelters are trending on Google. Sacramento has a long history of wartime threats from other nations. In fact, that's why there are bomb shelters all over below the city including one below Capitol Books on K street. (If you're one of those people that are into hidden rooms behind bookshelves, check out the picture at this link!) A bookstore bomb shelter may seem a little odd or out of place but below the city of Sacramento, it's not. City historian Marcia Eyman has a copy of a 1960s era map that gives directions to more than 130 bomb shelter locations in Sacramento. During the peak of the Cold War the government started the Civil Defense program, which was created to warn people about incoming bomb attacks and taught them to get below ground to safe places because Sacramento was surrounded by military bases and the capital was believed to be a target. 5. Um.... Anybody lose a lizard? The Folsom Police Department has detained a different type of escapee Thursday afternoon. A large (check out the picture. They mean LARGE) Argentine Tegu Lizard was located in area of School Street and Penaranda Drive in Folsom. Folsom Police Department's Animal Control division is hoping to locate the owner of this unique pet. The department is asking for for anyone who may know who it belongs to, to please contact Folsom Police communications center at (916) 355-7231 as soon as possible. (Folsom Telegraph)

  • Teens looking for paid work experience in Sacramento this summer should consider applying to the City's Landscape & Learning youth employment program. The City currently is accepting applications for youth-aide positions in the Youth, Parks, & Community Enrichment Department. L&L crews work in community parks and green spaces learning new skills, including plant maintenance and pruning. Participants also will learn about nature and receive specialized training while working with their peers. Applicants must be 14-17 years old on April 30 and reside within Sacramento city limits to be eligible. The Landscape & Learning program runs from June 20 to Aug. 12 and pays $15 per hour. (Sacramento City Express)
  • In the upcoming weeks, the City of Citrus Heights will be considering the adoption of a new licensing requirement for properties used as a short-term rental (STR). STRs are commonly found advertised on and rented through on-line platforms such as Airbnb or VRBO. The new regulations will require the host or property owner of the STR to obtain a business license prior to operation. There will be a public hearing to review the regulations on March 24 that is open to the public.
