First, today's weather: Clear throughout the day. High: 102 Low: 63.
Here are the top stories in Sacramento today:
- One of the 13 U.S. service members killed in a suicide bombing at Afghanistan's Kabul Airport was identified as Sgt. Nicole Gee from Sacramento, the Department of Defense said Saturday. According to Stars and Stripes, Gee served as a maintenance technician with the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit. The U.S. said it was the most lethal day for American forces in Afghanistan since 2011. (KCRA3)
- Two Sacramento area emergency room physicians are urging everyone to be very careful being out and about with the poor air quality in Sacramento. When the air quality index rises above 150, even if you don't smell the smoke, there is reason to be concerned. Sacramento saw an AQI of 165 on Friday, but Folsom saw readings of 571 on Saturday! Emergency department physician Dr. Nick Sawyer of UC Davis Health, said there's an uptick of patients in the ER with breathing issues. Dr. Vanessa Walker of Pulmonary Medicine Associates recommends calling for help "if [someone is] struggling to breathe, if they're breathing rapidly, if it looks like they're using the muscles in their neck to breathe." (KCRA3 and Yubanet)
- This driver left quite the path of destruction as he is caught on video running down a stop sign and barreling through someone's front yard. No one was injured in the yard, but a neighbor walking her dog was in the path of the vehicle just 30 seconds before it crossed the sidewalk she was using. A few minutes earlier, a car matching the same description rear ended another car in the area and fled the scene. Police are looking into whether there is a connection. (CBS Sacramento)
- At least one person is dead and 23 homes are damaged or destroyed after a fire ripped through a neighborhood in the Florin area of South Sacramento on Friday. Originally, there were several reports of missing persons, but all had been located by 1:00 p.m. Saturday. Crews with the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District were called to the four-alarm blaze along the 6500 block of Den Avenue, just off of Stockton Boulevard, around 2:30 p.m. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, but arson investigators have been called out. (ABC10)
- SacRT is relaunching its Airport Express Bus that was launched in January 2020, but halted later that year due to the COVID outbreak. The express bus will utilize a zero-emissions fleet of buses. Route 142 Airport Express runs between downtown Sacramento and the Sacramento International Airport every 30 minutes, starting at 4:45 a.m. and ending at 11:29 p.m. every day of the week. (FOX40)
Sunday's events in Sacramento

Sacramento Patch Notebook
- It seems like every neighborhood in Sacramento has a farmer's market. And for good reason! We have some of the best produce in the world right here in the Farm to Fork Capital! Why not get recognized for it? Vote for your favorite farmer's market in this nation-wide contest. A Sacramento market should get the top prize of $2,500 and national recognition. Don't you agree? I'm voting for the Folsom farmer's market. I just went there this Saturday and got some amazing figs and brie for lunch. YUM!
