🌱Sam's Club Hoax No Laughing Matter + Sac County Fair Is BACK!

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Sacramento.

(Patch Media)

Morning, Sacramento! Here's everything you need to know to get this Sunday started. Here's everything worth knowing around Sacramento today.

First, today's weather:

Partly sunny and very warm. High: 82 Low: 45.

Here are the top five stories in Sacramento today:

  1. The California State Railroad Museum recently reintroduced an exhibit titled "Crossing Lines: Women of the American Railroad" that was originally ready for its public debut at the start of the pandemic. The exhibit is the result of the graduate student internship and master's thesis of Sacramento State student Nicole Allison. It was written, designed, and curated entirely by women who shared a common goal to tell stories about the lives and roles of women associated with the railroad industry. Viewing and experiencing the exhibit during normal Museum hours is included with admission: $12 for adults; $6 for youths ages 6-17; free for children ages 5 and under. For more information about the California State Railroad Museum or Foundation, please visit www.californiarailroad.museum. (The Sacramento Press)
  2. The Sacramento County Fair is returning in May after being canceled the last two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The annual event will be held on the grounds of Cal Expo from May 26 to May 30. The theme this year is "BIGGER." There will be a dinosaur exhibit, tribute band performances and the return of 4-H and FAA. (KCRA3)
  3. A man walked into the Sam's Club in South Sacramento and handed the manager a note saying there was a bomb in the building. The man then disappeared. The store was evacuated and bomb sniffing dogs were brought in. No explosive device was found. Police are now investigating whether this was an April Fools Day prank. Regardless, they say this was no joke as people's lives were disrupted and resources were expended. No one was injured and the Sam's Club was cleared to reopen on Saturday. (CBS Sacramento)
  4. You're not alone if this story brings a little tear to your eye. John Almeda was among the runners at the 50 mile Ultra Marathon in Folsom on Saturday. Fittingly, the race took place on Autism Awareness Day, because, as a child John was diagnosed with non-verbal autism. John started with smaller races before running half marathons – and the Boston marathon – but that wasn't enough. "After he would run marathons, he wasn't done," his mother, Vanessa said. "He would still run five miles around wherever the race was." So, they signed him up for the Ultra. John ran alongside the race's 2021 winner, Reed Brewer, who helped him with pace, fueling, hydration and staying on the course. "Don't let anyone put limits on what you can and can't do," Vanessa said to her son. "You are created perfectly." (CBS Sacramento)
  5. A popular attraction is back in Sacramento – the California State Railroad Museum is hosting weekend train rides again. There are five trains a day, starting at 10 a.m. that run every 90 minutes until 4 p.m. It's a six mile, 50-minute trip. "Everything we operate and run is vintage from either the 20s or up through the 50s and is preserved as it would have been at that time period," said Tim Schroepfer, CEO of the California State Railroad Museum Foundation. Tickets for coach are $15 for adults, $8 for kids ages 6-17, and 5 and under ride free. (KCRA3)
