🌱Steinberg's 2022 Goals + Placer CSUS Campus + Yan Can Give!

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Sacramento.

Morning, Sacramento! It's Saturday, so let's get you started with everything you need to know going on in town today.

Just a note that I will be taking tomorrow off. I'll be back in your inbox bright and early Monday Morning! Have a great Sunday, Sacramento!

First, today's weather:

Partly sunny. High: 62 Low: 32.

Here are the top five stories today in Sacramento:

  1. Sacramento Mayor, Darrell Steinberg joined ABC10 to discuss his goals for 2022 including more housing for the homeless and building a sustainable future. Hear what he has to say at this link. (ABC10.com KXTV)
  2. Chef Martin Yan (of Yan Can Cook fame), along with his wife, gifted nearly 3,000 cookbooks, his first wok, thousands of photographs and other items and funds to create the Chef Martin Yan Legacy Archive in the UC Davis Library Archives and Special Collections. Chef Martin Yan graduated from UC Davis in the 1970s. His wife also graduated from the school that same decade. (ABC10 vis MSN)
  3. After suspending 345,000 disability checks because of fraud concerns, California officials on Thursday confirmed nearly all of those suspected claims were associated with criminals trying to trick the state into paying them. The Employment Development Department announced earlier this month that it had halted payments on those 345,000 disability claims associated with 27,000 suspicious doctors. On Thursday, the department announced it had verified the identity of just 485 of those doctors — meaning about 98% of them are likely fraudulent. The Employment Development Department has been plagued by fraud since the start of the pandemic, mostly in unemployment benefits. The state paid out roughly $20 billion in fraudulent claims since March 2020, or 11% of the $180 billion in claims paid since then. (KCRA3)
  4. California State University, Sacramento is opening up a campus in Placer County. It will be part of the Placer Ranch project north of Roseville. Placer Ranch is a 2,213-acre development within the Sunset Area Plan. California State University, Sacramento received 300 acres of land for its future Sacramento State Placer Center that could support up to 25,000 students from the late philanthropist Eli Broad and his company. Officials are hopeful that construction can start in the next couple of years. (Gold Country Media)
  5. A Sacramento man has been indicted on charges of attempting to kill or kidnap President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris and Dr. Anthony Fauci. He faces a five-county indictment for the cross-county plot, which his lawyer says may stem from mental illness. The 25-year-old was driving from California to Washington, D.C. and was stopped for speeding in Iowa when he was arrested in December. (CBS Sacramento)
