1 Wounded In San Ysidro Police Shooting

SAN DIEGO, CA — A San Diego Police Department officer opened fire Wednesday on a stolen vehicle while investigating a reported auto theft in San Ysidro, leaving one person with a non-fatal gunshot wound, authorities reported.

The law enforcement shooting in the 3600 block of Beyer Boulevard took place shortly after 7 a.m., according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department, which investigates gunfire involving SDPD personnel under terms of a regional agreement designed to prevent conflicts of interest.

The stolen vehicle was heading "in the direction of the officer" when the shooting occurred, sheriff's Lt. Juan Marquez said.

A passenger in the car suffered a gunshot wound to the shoulder and was taken to a hospital, SDPD Officer Colin Steinbroner said.

The driver of the stolen vehicle was "detained pending further investigation," Marquez said.

The names of the wounded person and the detainee were not released.
