18 Rescued From Disabled Boat Off San Diego Coast

U.S. Coast Guard and Navy crews rescued 18 people aboard a disabled and adrift vessel about 50 miles southwest of San Diego.

SAN DIEGO, CA — U.S. Coast Guard and Navy crews rescued 18 people from a disabled boat over the weekend in international waters off the coast of San Diego, authorities said Monday.

The 35-foot boat was taking on water when someone aboard the vessel requested help shortly before 8 a.m. Sunday about 50 miles southwest of San Diego, according to the Coast Guard.

The crew of the Navy guided-missile destroyer USS Spruance launched a seven-meter rigid hull inflatable boat crew to rescue the people and bring them aboard the Spruance. An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter aircrew then took them to Coast Guard Sector San Diego headquarters on two separate flights.
