2 Arrested In Plot To Smuggle Meth Into San Diego County Jail: Sheriff's Office

SAN DIEGO, CA — Two men were arrested after investigators uncovered a scheme to smuggle methamphetamine into a San Diego County jail through the mail, authorities said.

The investigation began July 17 when deputies assigned to the Sheriff's Mail Processing Unit intercepted mail addressed to incarcerated person Ignacio Zaragoza, 36, that authorities said was laced with meth.

Detectives identified the sender as Joshua Williams, 45, who admitted sending the drug-laced mail to Zaragoza, according to the sheriff's office.

Williams was arrested July 30 and was found in possession of a large amount of meth, additional papers prepared for mailing and equipment used to produce more drug-laced mail, sheriff's officials said.

A search of Zaragoza inside the jail also turned up a controlled substance that investigators believe was possessed for sale, according to the sheriff's office.

Both men were arrested on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance for sale, conspiracy, and bringing or sending a controlled substance to a jail facility.
