2 DMV Offices To Reopen In San Diego County

Locations in El Cajon and San Diego are two of just 25 DMV offices statewide that will reopen starting Friday.

SAN DIEGO COUNTY, CA — The California Department of Motor Vehicles announced that it will reopen select field offices across the state Friday, including two locations in San Diego County. The state shuttered DMV offices in late March due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The San Diego and San Marcos locations are two of just 25 DMV offices statewide that will reopen Friday. The San Diego location is at 3960 Normal St. and the San Marcos location is at 590 Rancheros Drive.

The offices will reopen to assist customers with appointments and with transactions that require an in-person visit, according to the DMV. The offices will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, except on Wednesdays, when offices will open at 9 a.m.

The DMV temporarily closed all offices March 27. After cleaning the offices, expanding virtual services and developing new protocols, the DMV is reopening the select offices based on location, size, service capacity and the ability to offer enhanced service to commercial driver license customers, according to DMV officials.

The DMV is also reopening its 10 industry business centers to process in-person business-related transactions. Behind-the-wheel drive tests continue to be suspended.

Employees will maintain physical distancing while serving customers with existing appointments and Californians in need of selected transactions that can only be completed in a DMV field office, including:

  • Paying registration for a vehicle impounded because of registration-related issues
  • Reinstating a suspended or revoked driver license
  • Applying for a reduced-fee or no-fee identification card
  • Processing commercial driver license transactions
  • Applying for a disabled person parking placards
  • Adding an ambulance certificate or firefighter endorsement to a driver license
  • Verifying a transit training document to drive a transit bus
  • Processing DMV Express customers for REAL ID transactions, if time and space allows

Although some field offices are reopening, DMV officials urged customers to use online services as much as possible. Expanded virtual services include driver license and vehicle registration renewals.
