2 Shot In Apparent Carjacking Attempt In Logan Heights

SAN DIEGO, CA — Two people sleeping in a parked car in Logan Heights early Wednesday were awoken by three strangers, one of whom pulled a gun and shot them when they declined to let them into the vehicle, police said.

The victims, a 37-year-old man and a 51-year-old woman, suffered apparently non-life-threatening wounds in the predawn shooting in the 1900 block of Kearney Avenue, according to the San Diego Police Department.

The events that led to the gunfire began shortly before 3:30 a.m., when the trio of men approached the silver Nissan Altima in which the victims were bedded down for the night alongside northbound Interstate 5, near Chicano Park, SDPD Officer Sarah Foster said.

After the interlopers roused the victims and demanded to be let into the vehicle to sleep, a quarrel broke out, Foster said. During the argument, one of the three men pulled a handgun and fired four rounds into the car before running away with his cohorts.

The victims then drove off and made a 911 call to report what had happened. Paramedics took them to UC San Diego Medical Center for treatment of bullet wounds to their upper bodies. They were expected to survive, police said.

The shooter and his companions remained at large in the early afternoon.
