2nd Person Dies After ​Logan Heights House Fire

A second person has died from injuries suffered in a predawn weekend house fire in Logan Heights, authorities reported Monday.

SAN DIEGO — A second person has died from injuries suffered in a predawn weekend house fire in Logan Heights, authorities reported Monday.

The woman succumbed to her injuries in a hospital, according to the county Medical Examiner's Office. A man died at the scene of the blaze four blocks west of state Route 15, which erupted for unknown reasons shortly before 4:30 a.m. Sunday, the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department reported.

Authorities have not released the victims' names, but a GoFundMe.com account set up to help their relatives with funeral expenses identified them as Nico Mayo and her husband, Jose A. Romero.

The couple's three children also were badly injured in the fire and remain hospitalized in critical condition, according to the donation website.

Firefighters responding to the blaze in the 3100 block of Clay Avenue arrived to find the family's home engulfed in flames with residents trapped inside.

"Due to the intense fire conditions, it took a little while for us to get it knocked down and get in there and get those victims out," SDFRD Battalion Chief Steve Salaz told NBC7.
