$6M In Scratchers Sold In San Diego Amid Improbable String Of Big SoCal Wins

Two local winners were among four Southern California residents who recently won big.

SAN DIEGO, CA — One San Diego area resident turned a $10 Scratchers ticket into $1 million, while another turned a $20 ticket into $5 million, the California Lottery announced.

Kuwa Harin won $5 million on a "California State Riches" Scratchers ticket purchased at a Chevron station on El Cajon Boulevard in San Diego. The ticket costs $20 and offers up to 31 chances to win, according to the California Lottery. The top prize is $5 million.

Ali Awad won $1 million on a "Merry Multiplier" Scratchers ticket purchased at 7-Eleven on San Diego Mission Road in San Diego. The ticket costs $10 and offers up to 20 chances to win. The top prize is $1 million.

They were two of four Southern California residents who recently won big.

"Having this many jackpots at extraordinarily high levels is statistically improbable and triggered exponential sales growth; the California Lottery cannot assume the same luck in the next 12 months," California Lottery officials said.

The two other winners include Jose Garfias, who won $7 million from an Xtreme Crossword Scratchers ticket bought in Compton, as well as Douglas Colton, who won $5 million from a Year of Fortune Scratchers purchased in Redlands.

California lottery officials project the total sales revenue will be more than $9 billion in the 2024-2025 fiscal year, $2.08 billion of which will go to public education.
