Alzheimer’s Association Brilliance Gala Inspires Hope in Fight Against Alzheimer’s Disease
Record setting numbers show growing momentum in the fight to end Alzheimer's
OCEANSIDE, Calif. — Music, emotion and a united call to action filled The Seabird Ocean Resort & Spa on May 1st as more than 230 community leaders, caregivers, advocates and supporters gathered for the Alzheimer’s Association San Diego & Imperial Chapter’s 2026 Brilliance Gala: Music Meets Memory, an evening that celebrated hope while generating critical support for the fight to end Alzheimer’s and all other dementia.
Fueled by strong sponsor growth, expanded community engagement and several new corporate partners, this year’s gala reflected growing momentum behind the Alzheimer’s Association mission across San Diego and Imperial counties, setting Brilliance Gala records for both funds raised and attendance.
Throughout the evening, guests experienced powerful reminders of the connection between music and memory, and how music can continue to spark recognition, emotion and moments of connection for individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease.

One of the night’s most moving moments came from Radio Hall of Famer Tommy Sablan, who shared deeply personal reflections about his mother’s journey with Alzheimer’s and the role music played in helping preserve connection, comfort and memory for their family.
“A night like this reminds us that no family should face Alzheimer’s alone,” said David Crean, Ph.D., whose own family has been impacted by the disease. “The momentum we are seeing in research gives families real hope, but there is still an urgent need for care, support, education and advocacy in our community. This gala helps make that possible.”

Funds raised through Brilliance Gala directly support Alzheimer’s Association programs and services across San Diego and Imperial counties, including support groups, care consultations, educational workshops, community outreach, advocacy efforts and the Alzheimer’s Association 24/7 Helpline. Support also helps accelerate groundbreaking research focused on earlier detection, improved treatments and, ultimately, a cure.
More than 60,000 people in San Diego County are currently living with Alzheimer’s disease, while more than 160,000 family caregivers provide unpaid care and support to loved ones navigating dementia.
The evening also recognized leaders helping drive progress in awareness, care and research.
iHeartMedia received the 2026 Visionary Award for using the power of media and storytelling to amplify awareness and elevate the conversation around Alzheimer’s disease. The organization was recognized for its ongoing partnership and community leadership, including the efforts of Noreen Ippolito and the iHeartMedia team.
Gregory Sahagian, MD received the 2026 Research Champion Award for his leadership advancing neurological care, clinical research and hope for families facing Alzheimer’s and other neurodegenerative diseases.
The Alzheimer’s Association also recognized the dedicated Gala Committee whose volunteer leadership, creativity and commitment helped transform the evening into one of the chapter’s most impactful events to date.
The event was emceed by Lauren Phinney, with additional support from KUSI-TV, which continues to help elevate awareness of Alzheimer’s disease and the growing need for community support.
