Heat Wave To Send SoCal Temps Soaring Mother's Day Weekend

Forecasters said temperatures could reach triple digits for some Southern California communities.

An unusually hot stretch of weather is expected to scorch Southern California beginning this weekend and lasting into early next week.

Temperatures are forecast to reach the 80s across much of the region Friday before rising into the 80s and 90s over the Mother's Day weekend, according to the National Weather Service. The heatwave is expected to last into Tuesday.

Forecasters said temperatures could reach triple digits Friday through Tuesday for some inland communities. Desert communities are under extreme heat warnings with temperatures expected to reach 108 degrees Monday in the Coachella Valley.

"100 degree readings may occur locally in the warmest valleys on Sunday and Monday," forecasters wrote Friday.

An extreme heat warning will be in effect from 10 a.m. Sunday to 8 p.m. Monday in the Coachella Valley, San Diego County Deserts, and San Gorgonio Pass near Banning, according to the NWS San Diego office. Dangerously hot conditions are expected in the impacted areas, with temperatures possibly reaching 104 to 109 degrees.

"Heat-related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat events," forecasters wrote.

Coastal communities are expected to stay cooler because of a lingering marine layer, though forecasters said it will gradually weaken.

The NWS Los Angeles office said there is only a 20% to 30% chance heat advisories will be issued for inland and valley areas because the heat wave is expected to be short-lived and overnight temperatures should remain relatively mild.

A cooling trend is expected to begin Tuesday as high pressure weakens and stronger onshore flow lowers temperatures by 4 to 8 degrees in most areas. Desert communities may not experience significant cooling until Wednesday, when temperatures are expected to return to near-normal levels across the region.
