SAN DIEGO, CA — A pregnant 17-year-old visiting San Diego from Arizona was fatally shot by her boyfriend early Saturday, police said, while her newborn baby remained in critical condition.
The shooting was reported around 1:10 a.m. in the 4900 block of Gardena Avenue in the Bay Park neighborhood. Responding officers found the teen, who was about 32 weeks pregnant, suffering from a gunshot wound to the head and unresponsive, according to the San Diego Police Department.
Officers began lifesaving measures before paramedics transported her to a hospital, where doctors performed an emergency cesarean section. The baby remained in critical condition. The mother died at the hospital despite lifesaving efforts.
Homicide investigators said the victim and several family members were staying at a short-term vacation rental while visiting San Diego from Arizona. Detectives determined the victim's 19-year-old boyfriend, identified as Trevon Williams of Arizona, had traveled to San Diego separately and met her outside the rental, where he shot her.
Police said Williams fled on foot into a nearby canyon after the shooting. Officers found him around 3 a.m. near the 4900 block of September Street and arrested him without incident. A semi-automatic handgun was recovered when he was taken into custody.
Williams was expected to be booked into San Diego County Jail on suspicion of murder.
