SAN DIEGO, CA — Michelin Guide-recognized restaurant Cloak & Petal plans to open a new café inside its Little Italy location later this summer.
The new concept, Black Mizu Café, is expected to open in late August or early September and will feature coffee from Torque Coffee in North Park and Compa Coffee Roasters in Rancho Bernardo, according to managing partner Cesar Vallin.
The 1,000-square-foot café will seat about 25 to 30 guests, with additional seating available in the adjacent restaurant dining room. Front windows that open outward are designed to create an open-air atmosphere.
The menu will include specialty drinks such as Cherry Blossom Matcha, Honey Yuzu Sparkling Matcha and White Miso Caramel Latte.
A small food menu created by Cloak & Petal Executive Chef Robert Cassidy will feature Japanese-inspired comfort food such as Breakfast Bao, Breakfast Eggroll, Edamame Hummus Toast, and Tamago Sando. Baked goods will be supplied by ASA Bakery & Cafe in Downtown San Diego.
Black Mizu Café is expected to operate daily from 6:30 or 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., with extended hours until 9 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays. During evening hours, the space will serve as a chef's table and private dining venue for Cloak & Petal, which Vallin opened in December 2017.
The restaurant's new café was designed in collaboration with Jennifer Guerin of JG Color Studios and will feature a Japandi-inspired aesthetic that blends Japanese minimalism with Scandinavian simplicity, Vallin said.
