ALPINE, CA — After a more than 2,000-mile journey from Minnesota to San Diego County, a rescued American black bear has arrived at Lions Tigers & Bears in Alpine, the animal sanctuary announced.
The 300-pound bear, named Olivia, was transported May 20 from Finlayson, Minnesota, to the East County sanctuary, where she will receive lifelong care, according to Lions Tigers & Bears. Officials said her owner sought assistance in rehoming her after recognizing the challenges of caring for a bear in private ownership.
Sanctuary founder and director Bobbi Brink traveled with the rescue team to complete the transfer.
"Every rescue represents a new beginning, and we are thrilled to welcome Olivia to Lions Tigers & Bears," Brink said in a statement.
Olivia arrived safely at the sanctuary and is undergoing quarantine and a comprehensive medical evaluation as she acclimates to her new surroundings. Animal care staff said the bear has been eating well, engaging with enrichment activities and exploring her environment.
"Her former owner made the decision to put Olivia's needs first, and we are honored to provide her with the lifelong care, safety, and enrichment she deserves," Brink said. "We look forward to watching her thrive in her new home."
Once she completes quarantine and medical evaluations, Olivia will move into a permanent habitat at the sanctuary, officials said.
Lions Tigers & Bears provides refuge for rescued exotic animals and wildlife that can no longer remain in private ownership or other facilities.
