SAN DIEGO, CA — San Diego County property owners who have not yet paid their 2025-26 property taxes have until June 30 to do so before additional penalties take effect, the county Treasurer-Tax Collector's Office said.
Beginning July 1, unpaid tax bills will go into default and incur a $33 redemption fee plus a 1.5% monthly penalty, according to Treasurer-Tax Collector Larry Cohen.
"That penalty adds up to 18% per year but is avoidable if payments are received by the June 30th deadline," Cohen said.
Property taxes are due in two installments. The first date is in December and the second is in April. Existing late payments have already been assessed a 10% penalty, plus a $10 fee for late second-installment payments.
County officials encouraged taxpayers to make payments online using the free e-check option. Taxpayers with questions can call 1-877-829-4732.
Under California law, properties that remain in default for five years may be subject to a tax sale.
Property taxes are expected to generate more than $9 billion for the region, funding schools, public safety, infrastructure, health and human services and other local services.
