The Marine was serving aboard the San Diego-based transport dock ship USS Anchorage during integrated training between the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit and the Makin Island group, according to authorities.

The Navy transitioned from a rescue mission to a recovery operation at 9 p.m. Friday after examining about 2,400 square miles over 43 hours using three ships and 12 aircraft, and with assistance from the U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Air Force.

The search continued on Sunday. The Marine's name was being withheld pending notification of family.

City News Service and the Associated Press contributed to this story.
