SAN DIEGO, CA — The Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank has launched its 16th annual Summer Food Drive, a countywide campaign aimed at helping provide food for children, families and seniors during the summer months when school meal programs are unavailable.
The drive runs through July 28. Shoppers can donate $5 Hunger Bags at checkout through July 4 or drop off nonperishable food items through July 28 at participating Albertsons, Vons and Pavilions stores across San Diego County.
The food bank serves an average of 400,000 people each month through more than 450 nonprofit partners and direct distribution programs. Officials said donations typically decline during the summer even as demand for food assistance remains high.
"Summer can place tremendous pressure on working families who are already struggling to make ends meet," said Casey Castillo, CEO of the San Diego Food Bank. "We invite San Diegans to become Hunger Heroes this summer by helping ensure children, seniors and families have access to nutritious food."
Residents can also make monetary donations or host virtual food drives to support the campaign.
This year's Summer Food Drive is sponsored by PNC Bank, San Diego Gas & Electric, Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation and CBS 8.
