SAN DIEGO, CA — The San Diego Blood Bank is encouraging residents to donate blood this month as school breaks and summer vacations contribute to seasonal declines in donations.

The organization said summer is typically one of the most difficult times of the year to maintain an adequate blood supply, even as demand remains steady for patients undergoing surgeries, cancer treatments, organ transplants, trauma care and other medical procedures. Platelet donations are also needed for cancer patients and others with serious medical conditions.

Eligible donors must be at least 17 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in general good health. Appointments are available at SanDiegoBloodBank.org. Walk-in donors are also accepted.
