Man Who Died In Sheriff's Custody Identified

A ruling on the cause of death remains on hold pending completion of postmortem examinations.

SAN DIEGO, CA — Authorities Tuesday publicly identified a man who passed out after being arrested by sheriff's personnel in the rural northern San Diego-area neighborhood where he lived and subsequently died while under medical care.

Deputies contacted 64-year-old Glenn Oliveri shortly before 7 p.m. Sunday while responding to a report that a person was causing a disturbance in the 31000 block of Calle El Potrero in Pauma Valley, according to the San Diego Police Department, which investigates in-custody fatalities involving the San Diego County Sheriff's Office under terms of a regional agreement designed to prevent conflicts of interest.

"Deputies arrived and spoke to (Oliveri)," SDPD Sgt. David Garren said Tuesday. "They believed (he) was under the influence of controlled substances and placed him under arrest. No force was used during the arrest."

After arriving at Vista Detention Facility to book the suspect into jail, the personnel found him unconscious and unresponsive in the back of their patrol vehicle, according to police.

"Paramedics ... arrived on scene and began lifesaving measures," the sergeant said. "The (suspect) was transported to a local hospital, where he later passed away."

A ruling on Oliveri's cause of death remains on hold pending completion of postmortem examinations.
