A man who was sitting on a set of steps in front of the residence when the patrol personnel arrived was taken into custody, questioned and arrested, Lt. Juan Marquez said. The suspect, 33-year-old Ryan Wesley Proffitt of Escondido, was booked into San Diego Central Jail on suspicion of two counts of first-degree murder.

Proffitt pleaded not guilty on Thursday to two counts of murder, plus a special circumstance allegation of committing multiple murders. If convicted of all charges and allegations, he faces either life in prison without the possibility of parole or the death penalty if prosecutors pursue capital punishment.

Deputy District Attorney Miriam Shoval said in court Thursday that Proffitt called 911 after the shooting and said he'd been in a "lover's quarrel" with the victims..

Shoval said Proffitt and Chandler were in an open relationship and at some point Chandler began dating McClure, causing Proffitt to become jealous.

Proffitt confronted the victims while armed, at which point he told investigators McClure charged at him and Proffitt shot him three times, then turned the gun on Chandler.

Proffitt remains in custody without bail.
