SAN DIEGO, CA — Fifteen San Diego County students received college-sponsored National Merit Scholarship awards, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced.
The awards range between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study at the institution financing the scholarship. This year, 138 colleges and universities are sponsoring more than 3,250 Merit Scholarship awards.
In total, about 6,500 students nationwide have been awarded a total of nearly $24 million in National Merit Scholarships.
In April, about 700 recipients of corporate-sponsored National Merit Scholarships awards were named, including nine recipients in San Diego County. In May, 2,500 students were named National Merit $2500 Scholarship winners, including 28 in San Diego.
In June, more than 2,500 college-sponsored award recipients were announced, including nine in San Diego. The latest group of over 750 additional winners of scholarships financed by colleges and universities included six San Diego area students.
The students were selected by a committee of college admissions officers and high school counselors who looked at their academic record, Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test scores, school and community activities, essays and recommendations.
