Wildfire In Campo Prompts Evacuation Orders, Freeway Closure

CAMPO, CA — A fast-moving wildfire crossed Interstate 8 in Campo on Wednesday evening, threatening structures, prompting evacuation orders and shutting down a stretch of the freeway in both directions.

As of 6:32 p.m., the Thorn Fire had grown to 699 acres and remained 0% contained, according to Cal Fire San Diego.

The blaze was first reported Wednesday afternoon on Buckthorn Trail, where it initially burned 8 to 10 acres with a moderate rate of spread, Cal Fire said. By 4:30 p.m., it had grown to about 30 acres in heavy vegetation before reaching about 50 acres and crossing I-8.

The fire had burned 236 acres by 5:35 p.m. and was 0% contained, according to Cal Fire. Ground and air crews continued working to contain the fire as officials warned of an immediate threat to structures.

"The fire continues to burn at a moderate to dangerous rate of spread," Cal Fire officials said. "Residents in the affected area should follow all evacuation orders and warnings immediately. Evacuating early helps ensure you and your family can leave safely before conditions worsen."

The San Diego County Sheriff's Office issued evacuation orders for zones SDC-2174, SDC-2175, SDC-2176, SDC-2331, SDC-2332, SDC-2333, SDC-2334, SDC-2241, SDC-2242, SDC-2243 and SDC-2244. Evacuation warnings were issued for zones SDC-2117, SDC-2177, SDC-2245, SDC-2335, SDC-2408 and SDC-2410.

A temporary evacuation point was established at Golden Acorn Casino at 1800 Golden Acorn Way in Campo.

Interstate 8 was closed between Crestwood and Ribbonwood roads, according to the California Highway Patrol. Motorists were advised to use Old Highway 80 as an alternate route and to use caution while emergency vehicles and first responders accessed the area.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
