Alleged Assault By Landlord Leads To Normal Heights SWAT Standoff

SAN DIEGO, CA — A Normal Heights resident who allegedly attacked a tenant of his with a baseball bat during an argument Thursday holed up in his home when police arrived, prompting a roughly five-hour standoff that ended with the suspect's arrest.

The alleged assault in the 4800 block of 35th Street was reported at about 6:30 a.m., according to the San Diego Police Department.

As officers tried to get the suspect to exit his house and give himself up peaceably, paramedics took the victim, who rents a cottage behind the suspect's home, to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, SDPD Officer Colin Steinbroner said.

After the suspect remained hunkered down in his residence for about 90 minutes, ignoring commands to surrender, police dispatched special-weapons- and-tactics personnel to the neighborhood north of El Cajon Boulevard and just west of state Route 15, Steinbroner said.

The stalemate continued until about 11 a.m., when officers detonated a concussion grenade on the property, prompting the suspect to exit his home, according to police. The identity of the man, who was taken into custody without further incident, was not immediately available.
