SAN DIEGO, CA — A dangerous stretch of extreme heat is set to grip San Diego County through the weekend, with temperatures expected to soar as high as 120 degrees in the deserts and 105 degrees in inland communities, prompting widespread heat warnings from the National Weather Service.
An extreme heat warning will take effect at 10 a.m. Thursday for the San Diego County mountains, including Julian and Pine Valley, and the county deserts, including Borrego Springs. Forecasters expect highs ranging from the mid-90s to 105 degrees in the mountains and 115 to 120 degrees in the deserts through 8 p.m. Sunday.
The warning expands to the San Diego County valleys at 10 a.m. Friday and remains in effect through 8 p.m. Sunday. High temperatures are forecast to reach the mid-90s in the western valleys and climb to around 105 degrees near the foothills, affecting communities including El Cajon, Escondido, La Mesa, Poway, San Marcos and Santee.
Coastal areas, including Carlsbad, Chula Vista, Encinitas, National City, Oceanside, Vista and San Diego, will be under a heat advisory from 10 a.m. Friday through 8 p.m. Sunday. Temperatures are expected to reach the mid-80s to around 90 degrees in the mesas and other higher coastal terrain.
The National Weather Service warned that heat-related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat events. Residents are advised to drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned spaces, avoid prolonged sun exposure, and check on relatives and neighbors.
