SAN DIEGO, CA — Federal safety officials have recalled about 1.5 million rechargeable hand warmers after reports that the devices caused hundreds of burn injuries and the death of a San Diego resident.
The OCOOPA Rechargeable Hand Warmers are being recalled due to the product's lithium-ion battery, which can overheat and ignite, posing a risk of serious injury or death, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.
The recall follows 1,480 reports of the hand warmers overheating, including 15 fires and 350 burn injuries, according to the commission. An 83-year-old San Diego consumer died in February after a recalled hand warmer caught fire.
The recall covers OCOOPA rechargeable lithium-ion battery hand warmers with model numbers UT3053, UT3056, ZLS-118, ZLS-118S, ZLS-118D, H01 and H01(PD). The hand warmers were sold in pairs with magnetic attachments, a USB-C charging cable and adjustable heat settings. The model number and three-digit batch number are printed on the underside of each device.
The products were sold online through Amazon, Ocoopa.com, Ocoopa.net and Walmart.com between September 2018 and May 2026 for $15 to $60.
Consumers should stop using the recalled hand warmers immediately and contact OCOOPA Direct for a full refund, either as a gift card or the original form of payment, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. To receive a refund, consumers must write "RECALLED" on the device with permanent marker and submit a photo showing the marking, model number and batch number through the company's recall website.
The CPSC warned consumers not to throw the recalled devices in the trash, recycling bins or battery recycling boxes because defective lithium-ion batteries pose a higher fire risk. Instead, they should contact their local household hazardous waste collection program for disposal instructions.
