Filly Dies After Racing Injury At Del Mar

DEL MAR, CA — A 3-year-old filly has died after suffering an injury during a race at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, state horse racing officials confirmed Saturday.

Valentina Jan was injured in Thursday's eighth race. The filly, who was running in just her second race, "sustained an injury past the half-mile pole, pulled up early on the turn and was transported off the track via equine ambulance," according to the official race chart.

She is the third horse to die from a racing injury at Del Mar this year, according to California Horse Racing Board data.

Two horses suffered fatal injuries at Del Mar last month: Cornucopian, a 4-year-old colt injured on July 25, and Can You Dream, a 3-year-old filly injured the following day.
