Domestic Violence Suspect Arrested After La Mesa Shooting, Attempted Attack On Officers

Police said the man raised a handgun, pointed it at officers and pulled the trigger, but the gun apparently malfunctioned.

LA MESA, CA — A domestic violence suspect was arrested after he shot a next-door neighbor and tried to shoot responding police officers over the weekend in San Diego's East County, authorities said.

Police responded at 3:38 a.m. Saturday to a report of an ongoing domestic violence incident at an apartment in the 8400 block of Buckland Street in La Mesa.

According to the La Mesa Police Department, a gun was fired inside the apartment, and the bullet traveled through a shared wall and struck a 51-year-old man who was sleeping in the neighboring apartment. The man was taken to a hospital in stable condition.

Officers encountered the suspect, identified as Trevor Shell, 31, outside his apartment. Police said Shell raised a handgun, pointed it at officers and pulled the trigger, but the gun apparently malfunctioned.

Officers took cover and called for assistance from other law enforcement agencies. Shell abandoned the gun and fled on foot before he was arrested. No shots were fired by police.

The woman involved in the initial domestic violence call was physically unharmed, police said.

Shell continued to resist after his arrest and was restrained before being taken to a hospital for evaluation of his mental state.

Police said Shell will be booked into San Diego County Jail after his release from the hospital. Charges are expected to include offenses related to domestic violence, the shooting of his neighbor and the attempted shooting of a police officer, though the exact charges have not been determined.
