After two decades in the community, the longtime restaurant has announced when it will close its doors.

ESCONDIDO, CA — Another longtime San Diego County restaurant is preparing to close its doors, ending a 20-year run in the community.

On the Border Mexican Grill & Cantina's Escondido location announced on social media that it will close Aug. 30.

"After 20 amazing years, it's time to say goodbye to our On The Border Escondido location," the restaurant said in the post. "Thank you to our incredible guests, team members, and community for the memories."

Customers were encouraged to visit before the Escondido restaurant closes, with the Mira Mesa location remaining open.

The announcement comes shortly after Patch reported that the Tex-Mex casual dining chain had closed all of its company-owned restaurants nationwide, while a handful of locally owned franchises remained open.

The Escondido and Mira Mesa restaurants are owned and operated by Brett Almquest, who previously told Patch that both locations remained open and were operating as usual following the company's nationwide closures.

With the Escondido closure, the Mira Mesa restaurant will be the only remaining On The Border location in the county.

On The Border filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in March 2025 after struggling with declining customer traffic, rising labor costs and inflation. The chain once operated more than 150 locations across the U.S. and several in South Korea.

The company had previously closed dozens of underperforming restaurants as part of its bankruptcy proceedings.
