Injured Horse Rescued From Valley Center Drainage Area

SAN DIEGO, CA — A 28-year-old horse was rescued overnight after falling into a drainage area at a Valley Center property, the San Diego Humane Society announced.

KC fell sometime after 7 p.m. Tuesday in her paddock. Friends and neighbors helped her owners move her to flatter ground, but she remained unable to stand.

Eight volunteers with the Humane Society's Emergency Response Team arrived around 11 p.m. and worked with KC's veterinarian to roll her and use a sling and support system to lift her. After about an hour in the sling and additional medication from the veterinarian, KC was able to stand.

She was moved to a smaller area to rest and recover. The volunteers remained at the scene until about 3 a.m.

The Emergency Response Team is trained to handle complex rescues involving large animals and uses specialized equipment to safely lift and stabilize animals that are trapped or unable to stand.
