SAN DIEGO, CA — Dinner at the Hilton San Diego Gaslamp Quarter comes with a little theater — and a little chef.

Le Petit Chef, a viral immersive dining experience that combines 3D projection mapping, animated storytelling and a four-course meal, has been serving diners at the downtown hotel since February 2025. The internationally known experience transforms the dining table into a stage, where a tiny animated chef and his culinary companions appear to prepare each course before the real dishes arrive.

Francesca Ramirez, general manager of the Hilton San Diego Gaslamp Quarter, told Patch that the experience was a "perfect fit" for the hotel when it debuted last year.

"It transforms dining into an event, which aligns perfectly with our vision of creating unforgettable experiences, not just overnight stays," Ramirez said.

The approximately two-hour experience follows the adventures of Le Petit Chef, a French chef who travels with characters from Spain, Italy and Japan. Through animated projections, the characters compete for a golden chef's hat as diners watch the story unfold directly on their tables.

Each course is tied to the animation, creating a dinner that is part meal and part show.

"Le Petit Chef is much more than a meal — it's a form of entertainment," Ramirez said. "Every course is introduced through beautifully choreographed projection mapping that tells a story before the dish is served, creating a dining experience that's interactive, playful, and incredibly immersive."

The experience offers three menus: Classic, Vegetarian and Junior. The Classic menu is $169 per person and includes tomato bread salad, truffle ravioli, grilled beef fillet with béarnaise sauce, and a Japanese-inspired dessert featuring white chocolate cake and matcha cream.

The Vegetarian menu is $139 per person and substitutes beef with cauliflower steak. The Junior menu, for children ages 6 to 12, is $89 and includes more familiar fare such as chicken and fries.

For Ramirez, the experience's appeal became clear the first time she saw it.

"I was genuinely impressed," she said.

"I've worked in hospitality for many years, so I've seen a lot of creative dining concepts, but this was unlike anything I'd experienced before," she added. "There's something incredibly charming about watching the story unfold right in front of you, and then seeing each beautifully prepared course arrive exactly as the animation predicted. It creates a sense of excitement and wonder that guests of all ages immediately connect with."

The hotel, located in the Gaslamp Quarter near the San Diego Convention Center and Petco Park, has positioned Le Petit Chef as part of its broader effort to attract both hotel guests and locals.

The experience has drawn convention attendees, tourists and San Diego residents celebrating birthdays, anniversaries and other special occasions, Ramirez said.

"It gives visitors and locals another reason to spend an evening downtown while reinforcing the neighborhood as a destination for innovative dining and entertainment," she said.

For diners who return, the experience is not necessarily the same. Le Petit Chef introduces refreshed menus and updated storylines approximately every 10 months, according to the hotel.

"Le Petit Chef has become an important part of our dining programming, and we're excited to continue offering the experience at Hilton San Diego Gaslamp Quarter," Ramirez said.

"One of the things I appreciate most about the concept is that it continues to evolve. As new storylines and culinary experiences are developed globally, we're always exploring opportunities to introduce fresh elements that encourage guests to return and experience something new."

Shows are held Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays at 6:30 p.m., with additional seatings at 5:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. Guests are encouraged to arrive 30 minutes before their scheduled show.

The San Diego experience is part of an international Le Petit Chef concept that bills itself as "3D cinema on your plate," bringing together projection technology, food and storytelling.

"At Hilton San Diego Gaslamp Quarter, we're passionate about creating experiences that go beyond what guests expect from a hotel," Ramirez said.

"Le Petit Chef reflects that philosophy perfectly. It combines innovation, storytelling, exceptional cuisine, and genuine hospitality into one unforgettable evening," she added. "Whether someone is visiting San Diego for the first time or has lived here for years, we love being able to offer an experience that surprises people and creates lasting memories."
